About

Midori Hirose’s bell-assembly workshop is one of the last opportunities for community members of the SE 82nd and Division neighborhood and Portland Community College staff, faculty and students to contribute to her year-long engagement in her role as APANO's Catalyst Artist.  Her Furin Ceramic bell-making activities have centered the history of SE Portland’s Japanese American farming community and the natural habitat. Throughout this academic year she has engaged with community members from the Jade District as well as neighbors, community and members of PCC in the process and during this final workshop before her exhibition, she invites folks to participate in assembling the furin that will be hung during the exhibition and distributed back to community members after the symposium and exhibition are complete.

During this particular workshop, participants will be assembling parts of each of the bell's components into one piece that will be installed in the SE Gallery during Midori Hirose's exhibition and symposium in April - May 2023.  Folks who have already participated in making furin are welcome, as are new participants. All ages welcome, all community members welcome. We do not require masks but to foster accessibility to all generations of participants, we do encourage masking.

Workshops will be held at the PCC SE Campus at 82nd and Division are where Japanese American farmers were once active in the early 1900’s.  During WWII, families were sent to internment camps, and many did not return. A few of the orchard trees that were planted are still fruiting to this day.

The ceramic bell-making workshop invites the public to make their own interpretations of Furin, Japanese “wind bells,” with the goal of building community connections and engaging in discussions about the past, present and future of the SE Portland area.
