About

Join us for a volunteer event at the Baileys Trail System. The Baileys Trail System currently features 47 miles of trail in the Wayne National Forest, and will be 88 miles upon completion. To learn more about the Baileys Trail System, visit our website: www.baileystrailsystem.org

The 2023 Baileys Summer Trails Day and Cleanup will be on August 26th, 2023 from 9:00am - 12:00pm. This volunteer event will consist of different tasks including but not limited to: brushing, shaping the trail to promote drainage, a litter cleanup, and/or rock armoring. Registered volunteers will meet Trail Crew Leaders at the Chauncey-Dover Park Trailhead (located at 8433 West Bailey Road, Millfield, OH 45761) of the Baileys Trail System at 9:00am. Click the link to register! Keep reading to learn more about what to expect.

A typical volunteer event at the Baileys Trail System begins at the Chauncey-Dover Park Trailhead with a group meeting. Here, we will gather the group together to review the plan for the day, discuss safety, and sign volunteer forms. The Chauncey-Dover Park Trailhead has a restroom (porta-potty), and will be the last opportunity to use a restroom before heading out on the trails.

Groups may drive an additional 10 or less miles from the trailhead to the work day access point (as instructed by group leaders), depending on the project location. Group Leaders will then pass out personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools, and the group will hike to the work site. A typical hike to the work site is 1-4 miles on trails or Forest Service access roads. The hiking ranges from easy to moderate terrain, and could feel strenuous when carrying a trail tool.

Once at the work site, volunteer projects can range in intensity. Rock armoring is a more strenuous task; shaping trail drainage is a moderate task; brushing is a low-intensity to moderate task; and litter cleanup is a low-intensity to moderate task. Review the above description to learn more about the planned task(s) for the day, or feel free to reach out to the event organizer with questions.

Volunteers should be prepared to hike over rugged terrain while carrying tools and wearing personal protective equipment (including hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves). Volunteers may encounter dirt and mud, and get sweaty and dirty while volunteering. There is no access to a restroom facility during the workday once the group departs from the trailhead. There is generally good cell phone coverage throughout the trail system, however volunteer projects may be in a location with poor to no cell phone service.

Volunteers should wear:

  • Closed-toed shoes with laces and good ankle support

  • Long Pants

  • Weather appropriate clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or sweaty

Volunteers should bring:

  • Water bottle

  • Snack(s)

  • Day Pack

All tools and personal protective equipment will be provided by ORCA.
